Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel founded luxury designer brand Chanel in 1910 when she opened her first hat shop in 21 rue Cambon in Paris. She started her career as a milliner, creating beautiful hats.

Chanel ‘s icon Flap bag, 2.55, is launched in February 1955 (2nd month 1955).  Thanks to its shoulder chain, the bag was an instant hit as it liberated women’s hands from the classic handbag.  The interlinked double CC clasp was launched in 1984 when Karl Lagerfeld took over the reins of the fashion house.

Counterfeited Chanel bags are unfortunately common. To know if a Chanel bag is authentic you can always check the serial code in form of a hologram sticker most commonly placed in the lower left front compartment. The serial number has different amounts of digits and font with alternative serifs indicating year of production. April 2021 Chanel started to chip their bags.  For 100% authentication a paper receipt from a Chanel store is required, or from a certified auction house or second-hand re-seller.
