The Evolution of Handbags
The Early Beginnings of Handbags:
The first handbags were essentially women’s pockets with handles attached to them. However, since women’s pockets were worn under skirts and close to the skin, they were considered undergarments. As a result, when bags for women first became popular, many viewed them as vulgar or risqué.
Modern Handbags – More Versatile Than Ever:
Today’s handbags are much more versatile. With added straps, they can be worn as both shoulder bags and crossbody bags. Bags with two handles are often referred to as totes or shoppers.
Coco Chanel’s Iconic Contribution:
Coco Chanel played a key role in liberating women’s hands from carrying a handbag when she introduced the classic flap bag with a shoulder chain strap in February 1955.
